The Republic of Abkhazia was headed by president (the incumbent is Sergei Bagapsh), who was supported by a vice president (after Raul Khadjimba's resignation, this position is currently vacant). They are served by a cabinet of ministers, which is headed by current prime minister Sergei Shamba. However, following Sergei's death during surgery the current acting president is Alexander Ankvab.
Most of the current cabinet members were first appointed after President Bagapsh came to power in 2005. Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba was one of the few Ministers to be re-appointed. Since then, the cabinet has undergone few changes. Notably, with the December 2009 re-election of President Bagapsh, Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab was elected Vice President, and on 13 February 2010 he was succeeded by Sergei Shamba.[1]
